Methylprednisolone
Indications/Uses
Bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, urticaria, eczema or dermatitis, acute rheumatic fever, acquired hemolytic anemia, ITP in adult, myeloblastosis, lymphogranulomatosis, ulcerative colitis, nephrotic syndrome, skin diseases, lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis. Suppression of the immune response after transplantations; as an adjuvant in treatment w/ cytostatic agents or in RT; substitution therapy in primary adrenocortical insufficiency & after adrenalectomy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 4-80 mg daily. Maintenance: 4-8 mg daily, may increase dose to 16 mg daily if necessary. Childn Initially 0.8-1.1 mg/kg. Maintenance: 2-4 mg daily, may increase dose to 8 mg daily if necessary. Adjuvant therapy in Addison's disease 4-8 mg daily, may increase to 16 mg in stressful situations.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Gastric ulcers, osteoporosis, psychiatric disorders, amebiasis, systemic mycosis infection, poliomyelitis, narrow or open-angle glaucoma & viral diseases.
Special Precautions
Severe HTN or cardiac insufficiency, diabetes, prolonged use, hypothyroid or hepatic cirrhosis. May mask signs of infection. Avoid abrupt w/drawal. Patients w/ latent TB.
Adverse Reactions
Cushing's syndrome, muscular weakness, HTN, osteoporosis, reduced glucose tolerance, DM, adrenal suppression, menstrual irregularities & amenorrhoea, peptic ulcer, increased susceptibility to & severity of infection, retarded growth in childn, glaucoma, cataract, thrombosis & pancreatitis, headache, vertigo, increased ICP w/ papilloedema, electrolyte disturbances & fluid retention, dermatologic & immunologic disturbance.
Drug Interactions
Cardiac glycosides, diuretics, antidiabetic agents, rifampicin, phenytoin or barbiturates, ASA, cyclosporin, ketoconazole, troleandomycin.
