Indications/Uses
Uncomplicated lower UTI (cystitis); other UTI. Skin & soft tissue infections; upper & lower resp tract infections. Pharyngitis & tonsillitis caused by β-hemolytic streptococci.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Cap Adult Usually 1-2 g daily in 2 divided doses 12 hrly or once 24 hrly. Uncomplicated lower UTI (cystitis) 1-2 g daily in single or 2 divided doses. Other UTI 2 g daily in 2 divided doses. Skin & soft tissue infections 1 g daily in single or 2 divided doses. Upper & lower resp tract infections Mild: Usually 1 g in 2 divided doses. Moderate to severe: 1-2 g daily in 2 divided doses (500 mg-1 g 12 hrly). Pharyngitis & tonsillitis caused by β-hemolytic streptococci 1 g in 2 divided doses for 10 days. Childn ≥6 yr 500 mg twice daily, 1-6 yr 250 mg twice daily. Dry syr Childn 25-50 mg/kg/day in divided dose 12 hrly. 22.7-27.3 kg 12.5 mL. 18.2-22.7 kg 10 mL. 13.6-18.2 kg 7.5 mL. 9.1-13.6 kg 5 mL. 4.5-9.1 kg 2.5 mL. Infant <1 yr 25 mg/kg/day in divided doses 12 hrly. Forte dry syr Childn 22.7-27.3 kg 10 mL twice daily. 18.2-22.7 kg 7.5 mL twice daily. 13.6-18.2 kg 5 mL twice daily. 9.1-13.6 kg 2.5 mL twice daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. Impaired renal function. Avoid prolonged use. False +ve reactions to Coombs' test & for glucose in the urine using Benedict's or Fehling's soln. Pregnancy. Premature infant.
Adverse Reactions
GI discomfort; hypersensitivity reactions; pseudomembranous colitis; dizziness, headache, fever, arthralgia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, SJS; hepatic dysfunction including cholestasis & elevations of serum transaminase, genital pruritus & moniliasis, vaginitis, moderate transient neutropenia.

Aminoglycosides, furosemide, probenecid.
