Rifampicin
Indications/Uses
TB, leprosy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult >50 kg 600 mg daily, <50 kg 450 mg daily. To be taken as a single dose for 1st 4 wk. For the next 5 mth, usual dose is 600 mg 2 times wkly. Childn 10-20 mg/kg. Max: 600 mg daily as a single dose. Combine w/ INH or ethambutol.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Icterus. Infants.
Special Precautions
Alcoholics. Impaired liver function. 1st 3 mth of pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
GI effects, abnormal liver function, jaundice, febrile reaction w/ flu-like symptoms. Alteration in kidney function & renal failure (due to hypersensitivity). Skin reactions, eosinophilia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, purpura, hemolysis, shock. Red colouring of urine, sputum, tears, staining of soft contact lens.
Drug Interactions
Decreases effectiveness of corticosteroids, coumarin anticoagulants, digitoxin, methadone, OC, tolbutamide.
