Methylprednisolone
Indications/Uses
Endocrine, rheumatic, collagen, skin disorders; allergy; ophth, resp, hematological, neoplastic diseases; edema; GI disorders; acute exacerbation of sklerosis multiforme; meningitis TB.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 4-48 mg daily. Multiple sclerosis 160 mg daily for 1 wk following by 64 mg daily for 1 mth, for patients which require high dose.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Systemic fungal infections.
Special Precautions
Prolonged use may cause subcapsular cataract, glaucoma, & secondary ocular infections associated w/ fungal & viral infections. High dose therapy may cause hypotension, salt & body fluid retention, increased K & Ca excretion & reduce body resistance. Vaccination during treatment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity. Body fluid/electrolyte disturbances, steroid myopathy; pancreatitis, abdominal distension, ulcerative oesophagitis; increased of liver enzymes; dermatological diseases; increased ICP, pseudotumour cerebri; growth supression in childn, irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, wt gain, secondary adrenal insufficiencies, reduced carbohydrate tolerance, developed cushingoid states; increased intraocular tension, glaucoma,  posterior subcapsular cataract, exophthalmos; masked & activated latent infection, opportunistic infections.
Drug Interactions
Cyclosporine, phenobarb, phenytoin, rifampicin, troleandomycin, ketoconazole, ASA, anticoagulants.
