Griseofulvin (micronized)
Indications/Uses
Fungal infection of the skin, scalp & nails (tinea corporis, pedis, cruris, barbae, capitis) not responsive to topical therapy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 500 mg daily as a single or in divided doses. More severe infections 750-1,000 mg daily in divided doses. Childn 10 mg/kg as a single or in divided doses. Duration: Tinea capitis: 4-6 wk; tinea corporis: 2-4 wk; tinea pedis: 4-8 wk; tinea unguium: At least for 4 mth (finger nail) or 6 mth (toe nail).
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately after meals.
Contraindications
Porphyria, liver cell damage, lupus erythematosus. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Long-term use. Cross-sensitivity reactions to other penicillins. Avoid direct sunlight/UV exposure.
Adverse Reactions
Skin rash, uriticaria, angioneurotic edema, epidermal necrosis (Lyell's syndrome), dry mouth, sensation of epigastrium pressure, headache, fatigue, dizziness, insomnia, mental confusion, paraesthesia of extremities, lupus erythematosus.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin, barbiturates, OC.
