Symptomatic relief & surgical prep of hyperthyroidism. May be used in combination w/ radioactive iodine to accelerate clinical improvement while awaiting the therapeutic effects of radioactive iodine.
Hypersensitivity. Monitor patients for symptoms of agranulocytosis (eg, headache, fever, soar throat, skin damage, feeling unwell) & advise to contact a doctor immediately if symptoms appear. Bone marrow depression, impaired liver function in asthmatics. Discontinue use in case of polyserositis syndrome that resembles lupus erythematosus. Patients who have had success w/ antithyroid treatment are at risk of hyperthyroidism; regularly check patients every yr. May cause fetal goiter & hyperthyroidism when given to pregnant woman. Adjust dose when used during pregnancy & discontinue therapy in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy.
