Acetylcysteine
Indications/Uses
Resp tract diseases associated w/ thick mucous hypersecretion eg, acute bronchitis, acute exacerbated bronchitis, chronic bronchitis, pulmonary emphysema, mucoviscidosis, bronchiectasis. Antidote therapy in accidental or intentional paracetamol poisoning; uropathy due to isophosphamide & cyclophosphamide.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Resp tract diseases 1 effervescent tab daily preferably at night. Accidental or intentional paracetamol poisoning Oral Initially 140 mg/kg, then 10 hr later followed by 70 mg/kg given every 4 hr for 1-3 days. Uropathy due to isophosphamide & cyclophosphamide 1,200 mg/m3 for 5 days every 28 days. During chemotherapy Oral 4 g daily given in 4 divided doses. Dissolve 1 effervescent tab in approx. 200 mL of water.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Dissolve 1 tab in ½ glass of water.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Doses should be taken after meals in patients w/ history of gastritis. Bronchial asthma. Pregnancy, lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, palpitation, stomatitis, pruritus, urticaria; nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain.
