Pizotifen is used to treat migraine headaches (severe throbbing pain or pulsating sensation usually affecting one side of the head and is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound).
Take Pizotifen exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
You may take this medicine with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Take Pizotifen regularly to prevent or reduce the severity of a migraine. Do not stop taking Pizotifen suddenly as it may worsen your condition. Your doctor will gradually reduce the dose before stopping it completely. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
Inform your doctor if Pizotifen does not give you any relief.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- fits or seizures
- increased pressure in the eye
- inability to completely empty the bladder when urinating
- prostate enlargement
- kidney disease
- liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Pizotifen to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.
Your doctor may need to do a medical examination and various tests before starting you on this medicine.
Pizotifen is not a painkiller. Do not take it for any other purpose other than to relieve a migraine.
Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
- Routine tests (e.g. liver/kidney function) may be done while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
- Your blood pressure may rise to unsafe levels without you noticing it. Monitor your blood pressure regularly during treatment.
- Regular monitoring of signs of depression may also be needed.
Pizotifen may cause drowsiness, dizziness, or blurred vision. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert or need to see clearly.
Other side effects include any of the following: nausea, vomiting, increased appetite, weight gain, drowsiness, vomiting, dry mouth, fatigue, fits or seizures, rash, difficulty sleeping, and muscle cramps.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following: yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain, dark coloured urine, tiredness, swelling in the legs and ankles.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- medicine for high blood pressure e.g. guanethidine, debrisoquine
- medicine for heartburn e.g. cisapride
- medicine for sleep disorder
- medicine for cold or allergy
- medicine for anxiety
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Pizotifen.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
