Risperidone
Indications/Uses
Acute & chronic schizophrenic psychoses & other psychotic conditions in which +ve &/or -ve symptoms predominate. Alleviates affective symptoms associated w/ schizophrenia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Day 1: 1 mg. Day 2: 2 mg. Day 3: 3 mg. To be taken twice daily. Usual optimal dosage: 2-4 mg twice daily. Elderly, in renal or hepatic impairment Initially 0.5 mg twice daily, increased to 1-2 mg twice daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Dosage should be gradually titrated as recommended; reduce dose if hypotension occurs. CV disease, Parkinsonism, epilepsy. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Renal or hepatic insufficiency. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Insomnia, agitation, anxiety, headache, somnolence, fatigue. Orthostatic hypotension, reflex tachycardia or HTN, extrapyramidal symptoms, wt gain.
Drug Interactions
Centrally-acting drugs, levodopa & other dopamine agonist.
