Paracetamol
Indications/Uses
Short-term treatment of moderate pain following surgery; fever, when IV route is clinically justified by an urgent need to treat pain or hyperthermia &/or when other routes of administration are not possible.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Adult & adolescent >50 kg 100 mL infusion for 15 min up to 4 times daily. Max daily dose: 4 g. Adult & adolescent <50 kg & childn >33 kg (approx 11 yr) 1.5 mL/kg up to 4 times daily. Max daily dose: 60 mg/kg or 3 g. Doses should be given w/ at least 4-hr interval.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Severe hepatocellular insufficiency. Hepatic failure or active liver disease.
Special Precautions
Hepatocellular insufficiency; chronic alcoholism & malnutrition (low reserves of hepatic glutathione); dehydration. Severe renal impairment (CrCl ≤30 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Malaise; hypersensitivity reaction; hypotension; increased hepatic transaminases level; thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, neutropenia; skin rash or urticaria, anaphylactic shock.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid, salicylamide, enzyme inducer, oral anticoagulants.
