Oxytocin
Indications/Uses
Induction of labor in post-maturity, premature membrane rupture or preeclampsia; caesarean section; post-partum hemorrhage & post-partum uterine hemorrhage.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Induction/enhancement of labor 1 IU/100 mL dextrose 5%; infusion rate: 2-8 drops/min Max: 40 drops/min. 3rd stage labor & puerperium (hemorrhage, uterine subinvolution) 5-10 IU slow IV. Caesarean section 5 IU (IM) after fetal delivery.
Contraindications
Cephalopelvic disproportion, abnormal presentation; excessive uterine distention, parity >4, elderly multiparae, previous caesarean section or other uterine surgery; severe toxemia, predisposition to amniotic fluid embolism, hypertonic contractions, placenta praevia. Pregnancy, 1st stage labor, primary or secondary uterine inertia, 2nd stage of labor before crowning of the head. Severe cardiac, liver or kidney function disorders; occlusive vascular disease; sepsis. Severe HTN, preeclampsia & eclampsia.
Special Precautions
CV disorders.
Adverse Reactions
Very occasionally water intoxication w/ headache & nausea; cardiac arrhythmias.
Drug Interactions
Prostaglandins, inhalation anaesth, vasoconstrictors.
