Indications/Uses
Lower resp tract infections including pneumonia, GUT infections, skin & skin structure infections, bone & joint infections, uncomplicated gonorrhoea & disseminated gonococcal urethritis, septicaemia & bacterial meningitis; peri-op prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 750 mg-1.5 g 8 hrly. Uncomplicated UTI, skin & skin structure infections, uncomplicated pneumonia 750 mg 8 hrly. Dose may be doubled in severe infections of the bone & joint. Life-threatening infections 1.5 g 6 hrly. Bacterial meningitis Max: 3 g 8 hrly. Uncomplicated gonorrhoea Single dose of 1.5 g IM w/ 1 g probenecid. Disseminated gonococcal infections 750 mg 8 hrly. Peri-op prophylaxis 1.5 g IV 30-60 min before op & 750 mg IM/IV 8 hrly. Open heart surgery A single 1.5 g dose IV during induction of anesth & 12 hrly for a total dose of 6 g. Childn ≥3 mth 50-100 mg/kg/day in divided doses. Bone & joint infections in childn 150 mg/kg/day. Bacterial meningitis 200-240 mg/kg/day.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillin. History of GI disease especially colitis. Patients currently on potent diuretics. 1st trimester of pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions, GI disturbances, haematological changes, thrombophlebitis (IV administration), superinfection.
Drug Interactions
Potent diuretics, aminoglycoside antibiotics.
