Orlistat
Indications/Uses
In conjunction w/ mildly hypocaloric diet for the treatment of obese patients w/ BMI ≥30 kg/m2 or those overwt w/ BMI >28 kg/m2 w/ risk factors.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 120 mg.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take w/ meals or 1 hr after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ chronic malabsorption, cholestasis. Lactation.
Special Precautions
May increase the possibility of GI disturbances if orlistat is taken w/ high fat diet. Type 2 DM. May reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vit (A, D, E, K). Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Oily spotting, flatus w/ fecal discharge, fecal urgency, fatty/oily stools, increased defecation, fecal incontinence. Abdominal discomfort, flatulence, diarrhea, soft stool, tooth or gum effects. Upper or lower resp tract infections, flu, headache, menstrual disorders, anxiety, fatigue, UTI.
Drug Interactions
Enhanced bioavailability & lipid-lowering effect of pravastatin. Reduce the absorption of vit D, E, β-carotene. Fibrate, acarbose, biguanide, anorectic agents. Warfarin or other anticoagulants. Oral hypoglycaemic drugs eg, sulfonylurea.
