Diazepam
Indications/Uses
Convulsions including febrile convulsion in childn.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >3 yr 10 mg, may be reduced to 5 mg. Childn 1-3 yr 5 mg.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines. Acute pulmonary insufficiency, resp depression; myasthenia gravis.
Special Precautions
Chronic pulmonary insufficiency, close-angle glaucoma. Not recommended for long-term chronic use. Tapered off gradually. May impair alertness & performance at skilled tasks. Renal or hepatic dysfunction. Not to be used during pregnancy. Avoid use during lactation. Not recommended in childn <1 yr. May require lower doses in elderly or debilitated patients.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, sedation, blurred vision, unsteadiness, ataxia; vertigo, headache, confusion, slurred speech, visual disturbance, tremor, change in libido, skin rashes, GI upset.
Drug Interactions
Enhanced effects of other CNS depressant. Potentiated effect of phenytoin. Inhibited metabolism w/ Na valproate. Antagonized levodopa effect. Potentiated effect w/ cimetidine. Altered response w/ alcohol.
