Indications/Uses
Essential HTN.
Dosage/Direction for Use
HTN Adult 5 mg once daily as monotherapy or combined therapy w/ other antihypertensive agents. Patients w/ kidney insufficiency, elderly (>65 yr) 2.5 mg once daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Acute heart failure, cardiogenic shock or decompensated heart failure requiring IV inotropic therapy. Sick sinus syndrome, 2nd & 3rd degree heart block (w/o pacemaker). History of bronchospasm & bronchial asthma; untreated pheochromocytoma; metabolic acidosis; bradycardia; hypotension; severe peripheral circulatory disturbances. Liver insufficiency or impaired liver function.
Special Precautions
Certain anaesth agents may cause myocardial depression. Patients w/ untreated CHF. Ischaemic heart disease, peripheral circulatory disorders (ie, Raynaud’s syndrome or disease, intermittent claudication), 1st degree of heart block, Prinzmetal's angina. Combination w/ Ca antagonist (ie, verapamil, diltiazem, class 1 antiarrhythmic drugs, centrally acting antihypertensive agents. May mask certain hypoglycemic symptoms in diabetic patients & may mask tachycardia symptoms in hyperthyroidism. Avoid abrupt w/drawal. COPD patients. History of psoriasis. May enhance sensitivity to allergen & severity of anaphylactic reactions. Not recommended for patients w/ galactose intolerance, Lapp-lactase deficiency, glucose-galactose malabsorption. Hepatic insufficiencies. Pregnancy, lactation. Childn, adolescents.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, dizziness, paresthesia, dyspnea, constipation, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, oedema; nightmare, depression; visual disturbances, bradycardia, heart failure, slow AV conduction or AV block, hypotension, intermittent claudication; bronchospasm, dyspepsia, bloating, nausea, pruritus, erythematous rash, impotence; aggravated psoriasis, syncope.
Drug Interactions
Paroxetine, fluoxetine, thioridazine, quinidine, nicardipine.
