Tizanidine HCl
Indications/Uses
Muscle pain due to spasm associated w/ static & functional spine disorders (cervical & lumbar syndromes); muscle pain due to post-op spasms ie, herniated intervertebral disc or pelvic OA. Adjunctive treatment of spasm due to neurological disorders eg, multiple sclerosis, chronic myelopathy, degenerative diseases of spinal nerves, cerebrovascular changes & brain nerve paralysis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Muscle pain due to spasm 2-4 mg or 1-2 tab 3 times daily. In severe cases, may be increased by an increment of 2 or 4 mg (1 or 2 tab) given at night. Spasm due to neurological disorders Initial dose should not be >6 mg daily in 3 divided doses. May be gradually increased to 2-4 mg w/ 1 wkly interval. Max: 36 mg daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Impaired liver function.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ orthostatic hypotension. May impair ability to drive vehicle or operate machinery. Patients w/ impaired liver & kidney function need dose adjustment. Liver function monitoring is recommended. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <18 yr. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue. High dose may cause muscle weakness, insomnia, hypotension, bradycardia.
Drug Interactions
Alcohol, acetaminophen, antihypertensives including diuretics. Other α2 adrenergic agonist.
