Megestrol acetate
Indications/Uses
Anorexia, cachexia, or an unexplained, significant wt loss in patients w/ a diagnosis of AIDS or other unknown factors.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 800 mg daily (20 mL daily). Daily dose: 400-800 mg.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Known or suspected pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Not intended for prophylactic use to avoid wt loss. Therapy should only be instituted after treatable causes of wt loss are sought & addressed. Patients w/ history of thromboembolic disease. Exacerbation of preexisting diabetes w/ increased insulin requirements. HIV-infected females. Greater risk of toxic reactions in patients w/ renal impairment. Women of childbearing potential should avoid becoming pregnant. May cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant women. Treatment should be discontinued in nursing mothers. Ped patients. Monitor renal function in elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain, chest pain, infection, moniliasis & sarcoma; cardiomyopathy & palpitation; constipation, dry mouth, hepatomegaly, increased salivation & oral moniliasis; leucopenia; increased LDH, edema & peripheral edema; paresthesia, confusion, convulsion, depression, neuropathy, hypesthesia & abnormal thinking; dyspnea, cough, pharyngitis & lung disorder; alopecia, herpes, pruritus, vesiculobullous rash, sweating & skin disorder; amblyopia; albuminuria, urinary incontinence, UTI & gynecomastia.
