Azithromycin
Indications/Uses
Mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible microorganisms in lower & upper resp tract, skin & skin structure, STD.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & adolescent ≥16 yr Upper & lower resp tract infections, uncomplicated skin & skin structure infection First day: 500 mg as a single dose, second-fifth day: 250 mg daily. Cervicitis & non-gonococcal urethritis 1,000 mg as a single dose.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide antibiotic. Concomitant administration w/ ergot derivatives.
Special Precautions
Discontinue if an allergic reaction occurs. Angioedema, anaphylaxis. Observe for signs of superinfection w/ non-susceptible organisms including fungi. Not to be used in patients w/ pneumonia; nosocomially acquired infections, known or suspected bacteremia, conditions requiring hospitalization, significant health problems (including immunodeficiency or functional asplenia). Severe renal impairment. Not to be used in patients w/ hepatic disease. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly or debilitated patients.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, flatulence & diarrhoea; allergic (less frequent).
Drug Interactions
Reduced peak serum level of absorption w/ Al- & Mg-containing antacids. May elevate digoxin levels w/ concomitant administration. May increase serum conc of theophylline or carbamazepine. Theoretical possibility of ergotism w/ ergot derivatives. Some of the related macrolides interfere w/ cyclosporine metabolism.
