Methylergometrine maleate
Indications/Uses
Active management of 3rd stage labor. Prevention & treatment of postpartum hemorrhage associated w/ uterine atony.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Active management of 3rd stage labor 1 mL IM following delivery of the anterior shoulder or immediately after delivery of the child. Prevention & treatment of postpartum hemorrhage 1 mL IM following placental expulsion or when bleeding occurs, may be repeated after an interval of not <2 hr. Total dose given w/in 24 hr should not be >3 mL. Subinvolution, lochiometra, puerperal bleeding 0.125-0.25 mg orally or 0.5-1 mL up to 3 times daily. Lactating women Should not be >3 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Avoid taking w/ grapefruit products.
Contraindications
Impaired liver or kidney function. Eclampsia or preeclampsia & increased threatened spontaneous abortion. Pregnancy, 1st & 2nd stage of labor before crowning of the head, primary & secondary uterine inertia, HTN, toxemia, occlusive vascular disease, sepsis. Lactation.
Special Precautions
In breech presentation, administer after delivery of the child & in multiple births after delivery of the last child. HTN, sepsis, obliterative vascular disease, impaired renal or hepatic function. Ca defiency, angina or MI. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting & abdominal pain; skin eruptions, sweating, dizziness, headache, HTN, vertigo, tachy- or bradycardia, chest pain & peripheral vasospastic reaction.
Drug Interactions
Sympathomimetics; halothane aneasth.
