Meropenem
Indications/Uses
Pneumonia, UTI, intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections (eg, endometritis), skin & soft tissue infections, meningitis, septicemia. Empiric treatment in adults w/ suspected febrile neutropenic infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Pneumonia, UTI, gynecologic infections, skin & skin structure infections 500 mg IV 8 hrly. Nosocomial pneumonia, peritonitis, suspected neutropenic infection, septicemia 1 g IV 8 hrly. Meningitis 2 g IV 8 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Partial cross-allergic reactions w/ penicillins & cephalosporins. History of allergy. Liver disease, infections due to MRSA, GI complaints. Pregnancy & lactation. Infant <3 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Local inj site reactions, systemic allergic reactions, rash, pruritus, urticaria, erythema multiforme, SJS, TEN, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis, reversible thrombocythemia, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, neutropenia. False +ve Coombs' test result; increased bilirubin, transaminase, alkaline phosphatase & serum LDH; headache, paresthesia, convulsion, oral & vag candidiasis.
