Meropenem trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Pneumonia, including nosocomial pneumonia. UTI. Peritonitis. Presumed infections in neutropenic patients. Septicaemia. Gynecological, skin & skin structure infections. Meningitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Recommended daily dose Adult Pneumonia; UTI; gynecological; skin & skin structure infections 500 mg IV 8 hrly. Nosocomial pneumonia; peritonitis; presumed infections in neutropenic patients & septicaemia 1 g IV 8 hrly. Meningitis 2 g IV 8 hrly. Childn >3 mth up to 12 yr 10-20 mg/kg 8 hrly depending on the type & severity of infection & condition of the patient; >50 kg Adult dose should be used. Meningitis 40 mg/kg 8 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
History of hypersensitivity to β-lactam antibiotics. Concurrent use w/ nephrotoxic drugs. Patients w/ renal & liver disease. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <3 mth.
Adverse Reactions
CNS, systemic, resp & blood disorders, CV disease, inflammation, thrombophlebitis, pain & edema; diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, headache, pseudomembranous colitis, apnea; rash, pruritus, urticaria, sweating, erythema multiforme, SJS & epidermal necrolysis; increase in serum concentration of bilirubin transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, & lactic dehydrogenase; paresthesia, leucopenia, oral & vag candidiasis.
