Cefadroxil monohydrate
Indications/Uses
Infections of resp tract (tonsillitis, pharyngitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, bronchiectasis, lung abscess, empyema, pleuritis, sinusitis, otitis media), skin & soft tissue (lymphangitis, abscess, cellulitis, decubital ulcer, mastitis, furunculosis, erysipelas), GUT (pyelonephitis, cystitis, adnexitis, endometritis), osteomyelitis, arthritis, septicemia, peritonitis, puerperal sepsis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Cap & Dry syr Usual dose: 1-2 g/day, to be given as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Uncomplicated UTI (cystitis) 1-2 g/day as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Other UTI 2 g/day in 2 divided doses. Skin & soft tissue infections 1 g/day as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. Resp tract infections Mild: 500 mg twice daily; Moderate to Severe: 500 mg-1 g twice daily. Pharyngitis & tonsillitis due to Group A β-hemolytic Streptococcus 500 mg twice daily for 10 days. Childn Dry syr 25-50 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Known allergy to penicillin. Impaired kidney function, colitis. May cause false +ve Coombs' test & urine glucose test using Benedict's or Fehling's soln. Pregnancy. Premature infants.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal cramps & pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, hypersensitivity reactions (eg, skin rash, itching), pseudomembranous colitis.
