Ascorbic acid
Indications/Uses
Ascorbic acid deficiency.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM/IV/SC inj Adult 100-200 mg 1-2 times daily for several days. Severe cases: 1,000-2,000 mg daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Hyperoxaluric.
Special Precautions
Avoid rapid IV inj. Patients w/ diabetes, recurrent renal calculi, under stool occult blood test or low Na diet or receiving anticoagulants should not use excessive & prolonged dose. May cause false result in urine glucose test. May cause false -ve result if consumed w/ in 48-72 hr prior to amine-dependent stool occult blood test. Large dose may increase oxalate acid level in urine & K oxalate precipitation in the kidney. Impaired kidney function &/or patients w/ a history of kidney stone. May cause hemolysis in patients w/ G6PD deficiency. May increase Fe absorption. Large dose can be dangerous for patients w/ hemochromatosis, thalassemia, polyerythema, leukemia, or sideroblastic anemia, sickle cell crisis. Pregnancy, lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Pain at inj site. Dizziness, fatigue, headache, insomnia, hot flushes, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, or temporary unconsciousness. Diarrhea (large dose). Diuretic effect (>600 mg).
Drug Interactions
Bishydroxycoumarin; acetosal, nicotine, alcohol, appetite enhancers, Fe supplement, phenytoin, certain anticonvulsants, estrogen-containing OCs, tetracycline; oral anticoagulants.
