Indications/Uses
Acute maxillary sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, UTI & uncomplicated skin & soft tissue infections due to susceptible organisms.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Oral Acute maxillary sinusitis 500 mg daily for 10-14 days. Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis 500 mg daily for 7 days. Community-acquired pneumonia 500 mg daily for 7-14 days. Complicated UTI 250 mg daily for 10 days. Uncomplicated UTI 250 mg daily for 3 days. Acute pyelonephritis 250 mg daily for 10 days. Uncomplicated skin & skin structure infections 500 mg daily for 7-10 days. Infusion Patient w/ normal renal function 250-500 mg once daily. Usually given for 7-14 days depending on the severity of the disease.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Ensure adequate fluid intake.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to quinolones. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <18 yr.
Special Precautions
CNS disorders that lower the seizure threshold, diabetes. Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight. Renal insufficiency.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions (discontinue), insomnia, dizziness or headache, increase in BUN or creatinine, increase of SGOT & SGPT, leukopenia, anemia, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, anorexia, abdominal pain or dyspepsia. Rarely, pseudomembranous colitis, convulsions & toxic psychoses.
Drug Interactions
Absorption decreased by antacids, sucralfate, metal cations, multivit. Concomitant use of NSAIDs may increase risk of seizures. May change the requirements of antidiabetic drugs.
