Cefotaxime
Indications/Uses
Serious & life-threatening infections, mainly those caused by gm +ve & gm -ve bacteria which are resistant to other antibiotics. Lower resp tract, GUT, gynaecological, skin & skin structure, intra-abdominal, bone & joint, CNS infection. Bacteremia & septicemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 1 g 12 hrly. Severe infection: 2 g twice daily. Max: 12 g daily. Infant & childn 1 mth-12 yr (<50 kg) 50-180 mg/kg IM/IV daily in 4-6 divided doses. Neonate & premature infant 1-4 wk 50 mg/kg daily in divided doses every 8 hr, <1 wk 50 mg/kg IV 12 hrly.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. Severe renal dysfunction. History of GI disease particularly colitis. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions, GI disturbances, superinfection, pain at inj site, phlebitis, transient leucopenia, eosinophilia, neutropenia.
Drug Interactions
Aminoglycosides, potent diuretics & probenecid.
