Cefpirome
Indications/Uses
Lower resp tract infections (bronchopneumonia & lobar pneumonia), complicated upper & lower UTI (pyelonephritis), cellulitis, skin abscess, wound infections, infections in neutropenic & immunocompromised patients.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Complicated upper & lower UTI, skin & soft tissue infections, lower resp tract infections 1 g 12 hrly. Max: 2 g/day. Bacteremia/septicemia, severe infections or infections in patient w/ neutropenia 2 g 12 hrly. Max: 4 g/day.
Contraindications
History of hypersensitivity to β-lactams. Sensitivity to penicillin.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillin. May cause pseudomembranous colitis & cross-sensitivity w/ penicillin. Monitor blood count in prolonged treatment (>10 days). Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions, GI effects, interstitial nephritis, increased liver enzyme, haematological changes, thrombophlebitis, pain at inj site, convulsion, reversible encephalopathy, superinfections.
Drug Interactions
Aminoglycosides, diuretics, probenecid; false +ve in Coombs' test; may cause creatinine-like reactions in creatinine test using picrate method.
