Dosage/Direction for Use
Pneumonia, UTI, endometritis & peritonitis, skin structure infections 500 mg IV 8 hrly. Nosocomial pneumonia, presumed infection in neutropaenic patients, septicaemia 1 g IV 8 hrly. Meningitis 2 g 8 hrly. Childn >3 mth & up to 12 yr 10-20 mg/kg 8 hrly depending on type & severity of infection.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Anaphylaxis. Rarely, pseudomembranous colitis. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <3 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Inflammation, thrombophlebitis, pain at inj site; rash, pruritus, urticaria; abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea; increases bilirubin, transaminase, alkaline phosphatase & LDH; headache, paraesthesia, convulsion. Rarely erythema multiforme, SJS, TEN.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid, valproic acid.
