Thiamphenicol
Indications/Uses
Resp tract, hepatobiliary, GIT & GUT infections. Typhoid & paratyphoid fever. Gonorrhea.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 500 mg 8 hrly. Childn 30-50 mg/kg/day in 4 divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before or 2 hr after meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Preexisting bone marrow depression or blood dyscrasias. Pregnancy & lactation. Infant.
Special Precautions
Monitor blood counts regularly during prolonged use. Hepatic & renal impairment.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting & diarrhea. Reversible bone marrow depression, peripheral & optic neuritis may occur during prolonged use. Less likely to cause Gray syndrome in neonates.
Drug Interactions
Enhance effects of warfarin & sulfonylureas. Increases plasma conc of phenytoin. Metabolism accelerated by phenobarb & rifampicin.
