Colchicine
Indications/Uses
Acute gouty arthritis & prophylaxis of gout.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Acute gouty arthritis Initially 0.5-1.2 mg, followed by 0.5 mg 2 hrly until pain is relieved or nausea, vomiting, diahrrea occurs. Usual dose: 4-8 mg. Prophylaxis of gout 0.5 mg once a wk to once daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ severe GI, urinary tract & heart diseases & hematologic disorders. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ susceptibility to toxicity; heart, liver, kidney & GI disease. SC or IM inj is not recommended as it may cause severe local irritation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Peripheral neuritis, muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea which usually occurs concomitantly w/ peptic ulcer or colon spasm, urticarial, aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis, dermatitis, purpura, alopecia. In toxic dose, may cause severe diarrhea, blood vessel damage & kidney impairment w/ hematuria & oliguria.
Drug Interactions
May impair the absorption of vit B12.

M04AC01 - colchicine ; Belongs to the class of preparations with no effect on uric acid metabolism. Used in the treatment of gout.
