Clobetasol propionate
Indications/Uses
Gel/Cream/Oint: Short-term treatment of psoriasis, eczema, lupus erythematous, lichen planus, inflammatory & pruritic manifestation of corticosteroid-responsive dermatosis. Lotion: Steroid-responsive dermatosis of the scalp eg, psoriasis, recalcitrant eczemas.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Gel/Cream/Oint Apply thinly 1-2 times daily, then stopped immediately after desired result has been achieved. Max: 2 g/day. Max total dose: 50 g/wk. Lotion Apply thinly & evenly on the scalp in the morning & evening.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ rosacea, acne, perioral dermatitis, skin lesion due to viral, fungal or bacterial infection. Dermatoses, including dermatitis & napkins eruption. Childn <1 yr. Lotion: Infection of the scalp.
Special Precautions
Gel/Cream/Oint: Prolonged & large dose or extensive & continuous use >2 wk. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <12 yr. Lotion: Patients w/ a history of corticosteroid-hypersensitivity. Local hypersensitivity reactions eg, erythema, rash, pruritus, itching, burn sensation, allergic contact dermatitis. Patients w/ psoriasis. Pregnancy & lactation. Prolonged use especially in infants & childn.
Adverse Reactions
Gel/Cream/Oint: Striae, lightening of normal skin color, vasodilatation; Cushing’s syndrome, hyperglycemia, glucosuria. Lotion: Pruritus, pain or burning sensation at the application site.
Drug Interactions
Increased systemic effect w/ CYP3A4 inhibitors (eg, ritonavir, itraconazole).
