Indications/Uses
Lower resp tract, GUT, gynaecological, skin & skin structure, intra-abdominal, bone & joint, CNS infection. Bacteremia & septicemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 2-6 g IM/IV daily. Max: 12 g. Mild to moderate infection, uncomplicated UTI 1 g 12 hrly. Moderate to serious infection 1 g 8 hrly. Life-threatening infection 2 g 8 hrly. Gonorrhoea 1 g as a single dose. Infant & childn 1 mth-12 yr 50-180 mg/kg IM/IV daily in 4-6 divided doses. Neonate & premature babies 1-4 wk 50 mg/kg IV 8 hrly, <1 wk 50 mg/kg IV 12 hrly. Contaminated or potentially contaminated surgery 1 g IM/IV 30-90 min pre-op.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Penicillin-sensitive patients. History of GI disease, particularly colitis. Severe renal dysfunction. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity reactions, GI effects, superinfection, pain at inj site, phlebitis, transient leukopenia, eosinophilia, neutropenia. Transient elevation in SGOT, SGPT, serum alkaline phosphatase & BUN; headache.
Drug Interactions
Aminoglycosides, potent diuretics & probenecid.
