Indications/Uses
Prophylaxis & treatment of venous thrombosis & pulmonary embolism, treatment of arterial embolism, prevention of clotting in arterial & heart surgery; cerebral thrombosis; anticoagulant in blood transfusion, extracorporeal circulation, dialysis procedures & for lab purposes.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Hemodialysis 7,500-12,500 IU. IV 5,000-10,000 IU 4 hrly by bolus inj or continuous infusion. SC 10,000 IU 8 hrly after initial IV bolus inj of 5,000 IU. Low-dose heparin regimen Usually 5,000 IU SC 8 or 12 hrly w/o lab control.
Contraindications
Patients w/ hemorrhage, thrombocytopenia, hemophilia, subacute bacterial endocarditis, peptic ulcer, HTN, jaundice, threatened abortion & major surgery involving the brain, spinal cord & eye.
Adverse Reactions
Hemorrhage, local irritation, hypersensitivity, thrombocytopenia, osteoporosis, elevations of SGOT & SGPT.
Drug Interactions
Dicoumarol, warfarin.
