Indications/Uses
Septicemia, meningitis, peritonitis, abdominal, biliary & GIT infections, bone & joints, soft tissue, renal infections & UTI; lower & upper resp tract infections (pneumonia); genital infections (gonorrhea); peri- & post-op prophylaxis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 1-2 g/day. Severe infections & cases of moderately-sensitive organism Max: 4 g/day. Infant & childn 3 wk-12 yr 20-80 mg/kg/day, ≥50 kg Same as adult dose. Infant ≤2 wk 20-50 mg/kg/day. Max: 50 mg/kg/day. Duration of treatment: Continue for 48-72 hr after fever subsides. Meningitis Infant & childn Initially 100 mg/kg/day. Max: 4 g/day. Gonorrhea 250 mg IM as single dose. Peri-op prophylaxis 1-2 g/day 30-90 min pre-op. Preterminal renal failure (CrCl <10 mL/min) Max: 2 g/day.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins & penicillins.
Special Precautions
Anaphylactic shock, superinfections, diarrhea subsequent to administration of antibacterial agents; prolonged treatment. Premature/hyperbilirubinemic neonate. May give false +ve result w/ Coombs' & galactosemia tests. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Haematological reactions, GI disturbances, skin reactions.
Drug Interactions
Chloramphenicol, Ca-containing soln, (eg, Hartmann's & Ringer's soln), amsacrine, vancomycin, fluconazole, aminoglycoside.
