Valacyclovir
Indications/Uses
HSV infections in the skin & mucous membrane including initial & recurrent genital herpes; herpes zoster.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Herpes zoster 1,000 mg 3 times daily for 7 days. Herpes simplex 500 mg 2 times daily. Duration of therapy: Initial episodes: 10 days; recurrent episodes: 5 days. Patient w/ renal impairment (CrCl 15-30 mL/min) Herpes zoster 1,000 mg 2 times daily. Herpes simplex No adjustment of dose. CrCl <15 mL/min Herpes zoster 1,000 mg once daily. Herpes simplex 500 mg once daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to valacyclovir or acyclovir.
Special Precautions
Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, vomiting, skin rash, diarrhea, abdominal pain.
