Indications/Uses
Control of grand mal & psychomotor seizures.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Cap Adult Initially 300 mg in 2 divided doses. Maintenance: 300-400 mg or 3-5 mg/kg/day. Max: 600 mg. Childn Initially 5 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses. Maintenance: 4-7 mg/kg/day. Powd for inj Adult Loading dose of 10-15 mg/kg by slow IV inj not exceeding 50 mg/min. Maintenance: 100 mg every 6-8 hr. Childn Not to exceed 1-3 mg/kg/min.
Administration
Should be taken with food: When administering to patients on nasogastric or other enteral feeds, do not administer feeds 2 hr before or after a dose. Be consistent throughout therapy in relation to feed times. Swallow cap whole, do not open/chew/crush. Do not switch dosage forms/brands w/o prior consideration.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to phenytoin or other hydantoin.
Special Precautions
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, ataxia, nystagmus, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, megaloblastic anemia due to deficiency of folic acid.
Drug Interactions
Reduced effect w/ alcohol & phenobarb.
