Indications/Uses
Increases vit D [25(OH)D] levels in patients w/ vit D insufficiency/deficiency status.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Treatment 5,000 IU/day for min of 8 wk. Maintenance 1,000 IU/day. Malabsorption, obesity & chronic vit D deficiency may need more dosage.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Hypercalcemia &/or hypercalciuria. Ca nephrolithiasis, nephrocalcinosis, hypervitaminosis. Severe kidney damage & failure.
Special Precautions
Check vit D levels first before using high doses of vit D & monitor every 3-6 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Hypersensitivity.
Drug Interactions
Reduced effects w/ anti-seizures (phenytoin, phenobarb, primidone), rifampicin & INH; glucocorticoids. Medications that cause fat malabsorption eg, orlistat, liqd paraffin, cholestyramine, can interfere w/ cholecalciferol absorption. Cytotoxic drugs, actinomycin & imidazole antifungal drugs interferes w/ the activity of vit D. Increased levels/effects of Al hydroxide, cardiac glycosides, Mg salts, sucralfate, vit D analogue.
