Cefixime trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Uncomplicated UTI, otitis media, pharyngitis & tonsillitis, acute bronchitis w/ acute exacerbation.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Cap Adult & childn ≥30 kg 50-100 mg twice daily, may be increased to 200 mg twice daily in severe infections. Dry syr Childn 1.5-3 mg/kg, may be increased to 6 mg/kg twice daily in severe infections.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ food or milk to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
History of shock or hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
History of penicillin hypersensitivity. Personal or familial history of allergy eg, asthma, rash, urticaria. Severely impaired kidney function; poor oral nutrition or receiving parenteral nutrition. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <6 mth (including newborn & premature babies). Elderly or debilitated patient.
Adverse Reactions
Shock; rash, urticaria, erythema, pruritus or fever; granulocytopenia, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia; rarely, increased SGOT & SGPT, alkaline phosphatase; renal insufficiency; pseudomembranous colitis, gastric discomfort, heartburn or anorexia, nausea, full-stomach sensation, constipation; interstitial pneumonia, changes in bacterial flora; vit K or B deficiency; headache or dizziness.
