Lactulose
Indications/Uses
Chronic constipation. Portal-systemic encephalopathy, including pre-coma & coma conditions.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Chronic constipation Adult Severe Initially 30 mL for 3 days. Maintenance: 15-25 mL daily. Moderate Initially 15-30 mL for 3 days. Maintenence: 10-15 mL daily. Mild Initially 15 mL for 3 days. Maintenance: 10 mL daily. Childn 5-14 yr Initially 15 mL for 3 days. Maintenance: 10 mL daily; 1-5 yr Initially 5-10 mL for 3 days. Maintenance: 5-10 mL daily; <1 yr Hepatic pre-coma & coma Initially 30-50 mL 3 times daily. Daily Maintenance: Adult 10-25 mL. Childn 7-14 yr 10 mL; 1-6 yr 5-10 mL; <1 yr 5 mL.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Galactosemia, intestinal obstruction.
Special Precautions
Prolonged use may cause abdominal & gastric discomfort, diarrhea, cramping & thirstiness. Do not use for >1 wk w/o consulting a physician. Diabetes or galactosemia. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Flatulence, stomach cramps, abdominal discomfort. Nausea & vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Neomycin & other anti-infectives may affect degradation. Antacids are not absorbed.
