Amikacin
Indications/Uses
Bacteraemia & septicaemia including neonatal sepsis; serious resp tract, bones & joints, CNS including meningitis, skin & soft tissue, intra-abdominal infections including peritonitis; burns & post-op infections; serious complicated & recurrent UTI.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 15 mg/kg/day in 2 or 3 divided doses equiv to 500 mg twice daily. Max: 1.5 g. Uncomplicated UTI 7.5 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses equiv to 250 mg twice daily. Childn 5 mg/kg/day in 2 or 3 divided doses. Neonate or premature infant Initial loading dose: 10 mg/kg/day followed by 15 mg/kg/day in 2 divided doses.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to amikacin or other aminoglycosides.
Special Precautions
Muscular disorders eg, myasthenia gravis or parkinsonism, neuromuscular blockade, resp paralysis, nephrotoxicity; prolonged use. Diminished GFR, impaired renal function; monitor renal function in elderly. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Irreversible ototoxicity eg, tinnitus, vertigo, hearing loss & loss of balance; nephrotoxicity eg, azotemia, oliguria, skin rash, drug fever, headache, paresthesia, nausea, vomiting, tremor, eosinophilia, arthralgia, anemia & hypotension.
