Indications/Uses
Type 2 DM particularly in overwt patients, when dietary management & exercise alone does not result in adequate glycaemic control. Adult: As monotherapy or in combination w/ other oral antidiabetic agents or w/ insulin. Childn 10 yr & adolescent: As monotherapy or in combination w/ insulin. Dosage/Direction for Use
500-mg tab 1 tab 3 times daily. 850-mg tab 1 tab twice daily. Max: 3 g/day. Combination therapy: 1 500-mg tab or ½-1 850-mg tab, may be increased a wkly intervals.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Diabetic coma; ketoacidosis; renal impairment; chronic liver disease; cardiac failure & recent MI; alcoholism; hypoxemia; shock. Pulmonary insufficiency, lactic acidosis.
Special Precautions
Renal insufficiency. Prophylactic annual serum B12 evaluation for patients on long-term metformin therapy. Monitor blood sugar readings for combination therapy w/ sulfonylurea or insulin. Pregnancy. Elderly, serious infections & traumatic conditions.
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
May cause hypoglycemia w/ sulfonylureas, insulin, β-blockers or ACE inhibitors. Alcohol & IV iodinated contrast media may cause lactic acidosis. Glucocorticoids & diuretics.
