Lithium carbonate
Indications/Uses
Mania & hypomania, bipolar depression, control of aggressive behaviour or intentional self-harm.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult (ave body wt 70 kg) Initially 400-1,200 mg as single dose daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Cardiac disease. Addison's disease or untreated hypothyroidism. Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
Monitor diet & fluid intake (maintain stable electrolyte balance). Concurrent infections. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
GI effects, muscle weakness, lack of coordination, drowsiness, dizziness, tinnitus, blurred vision, nausea, vertigo, dazed feeling, light hand tremors, thirst, polyuria. Wt gain, oedema. Memory impairment, hyperparathyroid.
Drug Interactions
Diuretics, steroids. Psychotropics. NSAIDs. Diazepam, methyldopa, tetracyclines, phenytoin, carbamazepine, indomethacin.
