Metronidazole
Indications/Uses
Prevention & treatment of amoebiasis, trichomoniasis, giardiasis & post-op infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Infusion Treatment: Loading dose: 15 mg/kg hrly. Maintenance: 7.5 mg/kg/hr. Repeat after 6-8 hr, max 4 g/24 hr. Prevention: 7.5 mg/kg 2 hr before operation. Repeat after 12 hr.
Contraindications
Blood dyscrasias. Active CNS disease.
Special Precautions
1st trimester of pregnancy, lactation.
Adverse Reactions
GI discomfort, anorexia, coated tongue, dry mouth, unpleasant taste, headache, pruritus, skin rash. Rarely, vomiting, diarrhea, neurologic effects, urethral discomfort & darkening of urine. Leukopenia. Peripheral neuropathy.
Drug Interactions
May provoke a disulfiram-like reaction w/ alcohol. Enhances the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
