Metformin HCl
Indications/Uses
Maturity-onset diabetes in obesity or normal body wt, & hyperinsulinaemia in non-responders to strict diet alone. NIDDM & IDDM.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Intially, one 850-mg tab 2 times daily or one 500-mg tab 3 times daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Impaired renal function w/ serum creatinine levels >12 mg/L; liver damage, cardioresp disorders w/ tissue hypoxaemia & alcohol intoxication; patients on low-calorie diets during use of diuretics or antihypertensives which alter renal functioning; prediabetes, latent diabetes, diabetic coma & precoma & ketoacidosis; conditions which might predispose to lactic acidosis. Cardiac failure & MI. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn.
Special Precautions
Concurrent traumas, surgery, infections; impaired renal function; conditions which may cause dehydration. Monitor blood glucose when doing combined therapy w/ a sulfonylurea.
Adverse Reactions
Metallic taste, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea & anorexia; pruritus, erythema, rash, urticaria, Meniere's syndrome & other allergic manifestations. Decreased vit B12 absorption.
Drug Interactions
Anticoagulants. Reduced clearance w/ cimetidine.
