Metronidazole
Indications/Uses
Urethritis & vaginitis, intestinal & hepatic amoebiasis. Prevention of post-op anaerobic infection, giardiasis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Childn Amoebiasis 35-50 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses for 10 days. Trichomoniasis 15 mg/kg/day in 3 divided doses for 7-10 days. Giardiasis 5 mg/kg 3 times daily for 5-7 days.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take at least 1 hr before meals.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. 1st trimester of pregnancy.
Special Precautions
CNS disease, alcohol intake. Blood test should be performed in long term use. Liver disease. Lactation. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, anorexia, epigastric pain. Convulsive seizure, peripheral neuropathy. Unpleasant taste, furred tongue, vomiting, GI disturbances. Urticaria, skin redness, pruritus, angioedema, anaphylaxis, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, ataxia, dark urine, leucopenia.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin & coumarin. Cimetidine, alcohol, disulfiram.
