Cefixime trihydrate
Indications/Uses
UTI caused by E. coli & Proteus mirabilis. Otitis media caused by H. influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis & S. pyogenes. Pharyngitis caused by S. pyogenes. Acute & chronic bronchitis caused by Strep pneumoniae & H. influenzae.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥30 kg 50-100 mg daily to be given twice daily. Severe infection Doses may be increased to 200 mg daily, to be given in 2 divided doses.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ food or milk to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporin or penicillin. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
History of hypersensitivity to penicillin; personal or familial history of various allergic conditions (bronchial asthma, rash, urticaria); severe kidney dysfunction, poor oral nutrition, receiving parenteral nutrition. Babies <6 mth including neonates & premature babies. Elderly or patients in debilitated states.
Adverse Reactions
Shock, hypersensitivity reactions, granulocytopenia, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia; increased SGOT, SGPT or alkaline phosphatase; kidney insufficiencies; pseudomembranous colitis; interstitial pneumonia; stomatitis or candidiasis; vit K deficiencies; headache, dizziness.
