Cefixime
Indications/Uses
UTI, otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, gonorrhoea. Typhoid fever in childn.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Adult & childn >12 yr or >50 kg 400 mg daily as a single dose or 200 mg 12 hrly. Urethritis, gonorrhea & cervicitis 400 mg as single dose. Syr Childn <12 yr 8 mg/kg daily as a single dose or in 2 divided doses (4 mg/kg) 12 hrly. Drops Adult & childn >30 kg 50-100 mg. More severe or intractable infections May be increased up to 200 mg. Childn 1.5-3 mg/kg. More severe or intractable infections May be increased up to 6 mg/kg. Doses to be taken twice daily. Typhoid fever 10-15 mg/kg daily for 2 wk. Uncomplicated cervical/urethral gonorrhea 400 mg as single dose.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Superinfection in prolonged use. History of penicillin hypersensitivity; history of allergy eg, bronchial asthma, rash, urticaria & other forms of allergy. Poor oral nutrition, receiving parenteral nutrition. Impaired kidney functions; peritoneal & haemodialysis. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <6 mth. Elderly & debility.
Adverse Reactions
GI effects, pseudomembranous colitis, hypersensitivity reactions. Transient increase in SGPT/SGOT & alkaline phosphatase, BUN or creatinine. Headache, dizziness. Transient blood disorders, genital pruritus, vaginitis & candidiasis. Shock, acute renal insufficiency.
Drug Interactions
Carbamazepine, warfarin & other anticoagulants.
