Furosemide
Indications/Uses
Edema due to heart failure, liver cirrhosis, kidney disease including nephrotic syndrome. Mild to moderate HTN, as mono or combination therapy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Edema Adult Initially 20-80 mg as a single dose, if necessary, doses may be repeated 6-8 hr later. Doses may be increased by 20-40 mg 6-8 hrly until the expected diuretic effect is achieved. Then doses is given 1-2 times daily. Patients w/ severe edema: Doses may be increased to 600 mg daily. Childn Initially 1-2 mg/kg as a single dose. If the expected response is not achieved, doses may be increased by 1-2 mg/kg 6-8 hrly until the expected diuretic is achieved. Max dose: 6 mg/kg. For maintenance, reduce dose until the effective minimal dose. HTN 40 mg twice daily.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: If GI distress occurs, take w/ food or milk.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to furosemide or sulfonamide. Anuria.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ electrolyte deficiency. Lab exam should be performed in prolonged use & large dose. Discontinue therapy if increased azotemia & oliguria occur in the treatment of severe kidney disease. In overdose, dehydration or electrolyte deficiencies may occur especially in elderly. Pregnancy, lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, diarrhea, pancreatitis, jaundice, anorexia, oral or gastric irritation, vomiting, seizures, constipation; systemic vasculitis, interstitial neprhtitis, necrotizing angiitis; tinnitus, hearing disorders, paresthesia, vertigo, dizziness, headache; thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, leucopenia, anemia; exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme, purpura, photosensitivity, urticaria, rash, pruritus; orthostatic hypotension; hyperglycemia, glycosuria, hyperuricemia.
Drug Interactions
Aminoglycosides, probenecid, salicylate, lithium.
