Paracetamol
Indications/Uses
Headache, fever, myalgia & toothache. For the short-term treatment of moderate pain (especially after surgery) & fever. When administration by IV route is clinically justified by an urgent need to treat pain & hyperthermia, &/or when other routes of administration are not possible.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Adult & childn >12 yr 1 tab, 6-12 yr ½ tab, 3-5 yr ¼ tab. To be taken 3-4 times daily. Infusion Adult & adolescent >50 kg 100 mL IV infusion for 15 min up to 4 times daily. Max daily dose: 4 g. Adult & adolescent <50 kg, childn >33 kg (approx 11 yr) 1.5 mL/kg up to 4 times daily. Max daily dose: 60 mg/kg or 3 g. Doses should be given w/ at least 4 hr interval.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Severe hepatocellular insufficiency.
Special Precautions
Renal & hepatic failure. Increase risk of liver damage w/ doses higher than recommended. Hepatocellular insufficiency, severe renal insufficiency (CrCl <30 mL/min), chronic alcoholism, chronic malnutrition (low reserves of hepatic glutathione), dehydration. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Hematological, skin reactions, other allergic reactions. Malaise, hypersensitivity reaction, hypotension, increased level of hepatic transaminase, thrombocytopenia, leucopenia, neutropenia.
Drug Interactions
Alcohol, oral anticoagulants, chloramphenicol, aspirin, phenobarb, liver enzyme inducers, hepatotoxic agents. Clearance may be reduced by probenecid. Elimination may be prolonged by salicylamide.
