Ursodeoxycholic acid
Indications/Uses
Radiolucent gallstones not exceeding 20 mm in diameter. Patients who are at increased risk or who refuse cholecystectomy, those at advanced age or w/ idiosyncratic reaction to general anesth & those who refuse surgical intervention.
Dosage/Direction for Use
8-10 mg/kg in 2 or 3 divided doses.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Calcified cholesterol stones, radiopaque stones or radiolucent bile pigment stones. Unremitting acute cholecystitis, cholangitis, biliary obstruction, pancreatitis or biliary GI fistula. Allergy to bile acids.
Special Precautions
Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, rash, pruritus.
Drug Interactions
Cholestyramine or Al hydroxide blocks absorption.
