Side Effects
In rare cases, various forms of allergic reactions, mainly rashes of the skin, rise in temperature; gastrointestinal and hepatic disorders; disturbances of taste; symptoms of over excitability; single cases of pemphigus-like skin reactions and lichen planus.
Patients with rheumatoid arthritis show a greater tendency to develop undesirable effects under pyritinol treatment. Additionally, in these patients typical side effects of penicillamine-like antirheumatic drugs (eg, proteinuria, reduction in the blood platelet and white cell count) have been observed very rarely. Urine status and blood picture should therefore be checked regularly in these patients. In cases of side-effects the medicament should be discontinued as a precaution and the physician should be consulted.
Drug Interactions
In patients with rheumatoid arthritis being treated with penicillamine, tiopronine, gold preparations or levamisol, concomitant administration of pyritinol can potentiate the side effects typical of these substances.
